Bits and Bobs

~The 91st Academy Awards are this weekend. Nominations here, if you’re in need of a reminder.

~I have yet to watch Roma which seems to be a strong contender for best picture. It’s on Netflix, so I’ll definitely be watching it before Sunday, but also hoping to squeeze in Green Book as well.

~Personally I’m a big fan of The Favourite and Olivia Colman, but I just read that Glenn Close has been nominated for an Oscar several times and has never won, so I wouldn’t be at all disappointed if she nabbed the statue this time around: she was luminous in her role in The Wife.

~And apparently I stand alone in my dislike of A Star is Born. Well, perhaps just me and Gary Kramer of Salon. Yep, what he says.

~Here’s a quick look at the swag the nominees get this year. Apparently, the rest of us aren’t missing out on too much.

~And of course there’ll be the fashion. Hoping there is a lack of influence of this trend on the red carpet.

The photo up top is of Cornflake Crispies, the distant, ever so slightly more sophisticated cousin of Rice Krispy Treats. They can be thrown together in 20 minutes, including 10 in the freezer, and are ridiculously tasty for something so stupidly simple. I plan on nominating them for an Oscar.

Seriously, they have been made and consumed half a dozen times around here in recent weeks. I even served them as dessert after dinner one night recently, along with a glass of Grand Marnier. A brilliant combination, even if I say so myself.

Here’s how you make them:

Melt 4 T. of butter and 4 oz of chocolate in a large pan over very low heat. Do this slowly so as not to burn the chocolate or separate the fat in the butter. Trust me, neither one is good.

Take off the heat and add 3 T. Lyle’s golden syrup (here, although you should be able to find it in many grocery stores).

Mix in 3-1/2 C. cornflakes.

Spoon into cupcake cases in a muffin pan and throw in the freezer for 10-15 mins.

We like to eat them cold from the freezer but you can also let them sit for a few minutes to warm up. You can use any type of chocolate you like. Bittersweet makes them a little more chocolate-y and a touch more sophisticated, but we like milk chocolate best.

Have an Oscar of a weekend.
