I’m not a fan of an overly decorated table, especially around the holidays when it’s so easy to overdo things. And while I am a fan of sticking with traditional colours that so naturally speak of the season, it’s also nice to throw in a few things that aren’t quite as expected.
Which goes especially for flowers around this time. Love the yellows and golds that fall brings, but not crazy about mums which seems to be the done thing.
This table was inspired by the plaid runner I saw at Target (that I became rather illogically smitten with.) The perfect colours are there, just muted. And in order to avoid those mums I opted instead to use Billy Balls for their fun and playful pop of yellow, pairing them with thistles, simply because they seemed to play nicely together.
And the container I put them in? Empty tins that I gave a quick coat of leftover chalkboard paint, running a piece of chalk over it when dry. Simple and cheap.
And to round it all out I threw on some apples and pinecones which I had on hand.
And some votives. I’m not a fan of anything tall which obstructs your view at the table. There is nothing worse than having to peer around things to see people you’re trying to have a conversation with and for me that includes taper candles as well. I generally keep everything low and unobtrusive.
The plates are years old from Pottery Barn, which just happen to be in fall colours, to which I added plain white napkins. My initial intention was to add a small white decorative pumpkin to each setting, but my local grocery store was in short supply this year and I couldn’t be bothered to venture further afield to track them down, so instead I opted for a simple piece of wheat which I snagged from a bunch I already had in a vase.
